Ingrown Hair Scars Be Gone! Tips on how to get your beautiful legs back!

Ingrown hairs are pesky little buggers and can often have lasting effects even after you’ve removed them.  If you don’t treat the problem properly, you could risk damaging your skin permanently. While scarring is quite common, take comfort in knowing there are treatments available to help reduce the appearance of ingrown hair scars.
Stock up on:
  • Body scrub (such as St. Ives Apricot Scrub)
  • Loofah
  • Sunscreen
  • Bleaching cream
  • Cocoa butter

Here’s how to tackle the problem at home:

  1. Exfoliate the affected area, using a body scrub (my fave is St. Ives Apricot Scrub) and loofah. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, encouraging new skin cell production. Less damaged skin cells will be apparent sooner when you exfoliate regularly.
  2. Wear sunscreen on the scarred area. The sun darkens the appearance of ingrown hair scars, so keep the area protected from the sun’s damaging rays. Choose a full-protection sunscreen with a high SPF factor.
  3. Apply a bleaching cream to the scars like a spot treatment. Ingrown hair scars usually have darker pigmentation than surrounding skin. A bleaching cream will lighten them, helping them to blend in with the rest of your skin. You’ll need to apply most over-the-counter bleaching creams twice daily for several weeks before you see results – but the long-term effects are worth it.
  4. Try rubbing cocoa butter on the ingrown hair scars. Cocoa butter has been shown to fade scars and encourage healthy skin.

If all else fails…

  1. Visit a dermatologist, who can prescribe stronger bleaching or fading creams such as Retin-A creams. These topical treatments encourage cell regeneration, meaning that you’ll have a fresher, more even skin tone with regular use.
  2. Get laser treatment on the ingrown hair scars. Laser light will target the hyper pigmentation in the scars, thereby lightening the area. In addition, laser treatments encourage collagen production so your skin will look firmer and more even. Laser treatments can be quite expensive, and you’ll generally need multiple sessions to achieve satisfactory results.
  3. Talk to your dermatologist about chemical peels to lighten the ingrown hair scars. Depending on the severity of the scars, you can opt for light, medium or deep chemical peels. Your skin will be burned by the chemicals, but after it heals, younger skin will be revealed. If you opt for a series of peels, you’ll generally have better results.
  4. Consider microdermabrasion on the scarred area. The top layers of your skin will be buffed away by a mini sandblaster-type device. The skin below will be younger and less damaged so the scars will not be as apparent.

Quick ‘n Easy DIY Facial

To prepare a smooth canvas for your makeup, always start off with clean, moisturized skin. You’ll find that your makeup glides on and blends more easily.

1. Keep your skin free of buildup by using a gentle cleanser in the morning and at night. When cleansing your face, do so gently in upward motion strokes – do not tug, pull or scrub too hard to prevent irritation.
2. Freshen up your skin with a toner containing ingredients that suit your skin type.
3. Indulge your skin and keep it hydrated with a moisturizer that is compatable with your skin type. Make sure your daytime moisturizer contains SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
4. Treat yourself to an at-home-facial 2 to 3 times a week. Use a mild cleanser, then exfoliate with a gentle scrub that contains exfoliants that are round and non-abrasive.
5. Apply a facial mask after exfoliating. Rinse off thoroughly and get a good night’s sleep!

Tip: Even when you’re steering clear of the sun, or it appears to be a cloudy day, always be sure your makeup foundation or moisturizer contains SPF 15 or higher.
